Reading for fun is rare when a home has no books. Our weekend reading circles in Kolhapur district set up small libraries of picture books and story books in Marathi, Hindi and English.
Volunteers read aloud, children act out the stories, and each child borrows a book for the week. Older students now lead some of the circles for the younger ones.
Teachers say the children who come regularly are reading more fluently and speaking up more in class.
