Farm Ponds and Check Dams Ready Before the Monsoon

Desilted check dams and new farm ponds will help drought-prone villages hold on to rainwater.

  • Dharashiv, Maharashtra

In drought-prone Dharashiv, most rain runs off before it can soak into the ground. Before this monsoon, we worked with farmers to desilt three check dams and dig 18 farm ponds.

Villagers contributed labour, and the silt removed from the dams was spread on nearby fields to improve the soil.

Farmers expect the stored water to support a second crop this year, and wells nearby should stay full for longer.
