A new water filter plant and pipeline mean women and girls no longer walk two kilometres for water.

  • Satara, Maharashtra

For years, women and girls in a hill village in Satara district walked two kilometres every morning to fetch water. A new water filter plant and pipeline now bring clean water to the centre of the village.

The village water committee chose the site, villagers helped lay the pipeline, and the committee collects a small monthly fee for maintenance.

Girls who used to miss the start of school to fetch water now arrive on time.

Highlights

  • Clean water for 230 households
  • Run by the village water committee
  • Less time fetching water, more time in school
